Scott Helman is 18 and from Toronto, Canada and has been pursuing music since he was about 15 or 16. Bless his friend who told him to make music for the rest of his life, because I am currently bathing in the beauty that is his EP.
His EP titled Songs For Friends consists of 3 killer songs named “Cry Cry Cry,” “The Lion,” and “Apathy.” “Cry Cry Cry” has such a nice energy with its’ sound and the rhythm of it is ridiculously good. The lyrics in “The Lion” have so much depth and meaning; I could analyze this song all day. The chorus just leaves me in awe. “Apathy” has a sorta Cage the Elephant vibe to it which is entrancing, and the lyrics talk about being completely done with someone, and I mean haven’t we all felt that way(if you say no, you’re lying to yourself). I can’t even choose a favorite from his EP because honestly everything is jaw-dropping. The fact that he’s 18 and producing this type of quality music is shocking. Another great thing about his EP is that it is free with a download available on his website. Could anything get much better than that?
You can check out more of his stuff on his Youtube channel. His recent video is a cover of Vance Joy’s “Riptide” and he utilizes the keyboard, guitar, and a loop pedal. Along with his vocals, the cover is insanely awesome. There are 3 live video performances where he even sounds better live. Also, his official video for “The Lion” is on his channel which is a smashing video.
Scott is not only an amazing singer, but actively responds to fans online. You can follow and tweet him (@ScottHelman) and chances are that he’ll respond. He’s extremely humble which makes the fact that he’s so talented ten times sweeter. He’s a lovely person and an incredible singer and listening to him will change the way you think about music and musicians.
Maybe I sound like i’m over exaggerating, but I’m being 100% serious when I say Scott Helman has a hell of a lot of talent and he deserves recognition for it. I’m just gonna cry cry cry while listening to his EP on repeat. Yes I did just say that and I don’t regret it.
