Alice Temperley, designer of Temperley London, has got to be one of my women crushes of the moment. Her designs are incredible, embodying the perfect British woman in every which way. Since there are no stores in North America, plus most of us don’t have thousands of dollars lying around plus shipping and handling, I thought we would dissect her latest trends in order to become “Temperley Girls” on a budget!
1. KNIT SCARVES
What better way to keep warm on a rainy British day than a nice knit scarf? Lucky for us, scarves are a reasonably easy purchase, and don’t require much hunting in order to mimic.
How you can rock it: Bundle up! If you don’t feel like buying a scarf, pick up some knitting needles and knit away. P.S, these also make perfect, inexpensive gifts for the holidays! Make a custom made scarf just for you as well as picking up a new hobby.
2. COBALT BLUE
People tend to generally fall into greys and blacks come winter, but this shade of blue is a perfect colour for wintertime. It can be done so many ways, from a major statement piece (like shoes on the left) or, more subtly (like the jumper on the right).
How you can rock it: While you’re shopping around for your winter pieces, step away from the neutrals! Grab a deep blue coat instead of black, or a cobalt sweater instead of black in order to freshen things up a bit.
3. FLORALS
Florals are usually seen as more of a summer or spring print, but as seen here and many times during New York Fashion Week, flower power is here to stay. The prints have become bigger, making it separate from the trends we see in the sunny days.
How you can rock it: This is definitely one trend that I will be keeping my eyes open for! Look for larger flower prints next time you’re shopping, or even recycle one of your summer pieces. Take a flower sundress and make it season appropriate with tights, boots, a scarf, and a nice jacket.
4. BELTS
Definitely not a new trend in any way, but belts are a very good fashion hack during the winter. People tend to go into baggy and bigger clothing during the colder months; a belt is an easy way to redefine the waist while still keeping cozy.
How you can rock it: When wearing that super cozy but figure hiding cardigan (come one, we all have one), simply belt it at the waist to showcase your figure!
5. MENSWEAR
When I think about a British Fashionista, my first thought is always an amazing double-breasted trench coat. Adding on to that with a more menswear look, a bit slouchier and masculine, and you’ve got the perfect coat for this season!
How you can rock it: My favourite ways to wear menswear are with pants and jackets. I love my “boyfriend” jeans, and many stores sell mens’ inspired dress pants as well. For a coat, think of a double-breasted trench, something that both Victoria and David Beckham would wear.
Well, it’s true; we can’t all be British socialites (even though that is a lifelong dream of mine), no matter how hard we try. With these simple, frugal updates though, we are one step closer to grabbing lunch with Prince George’s nanny (could you imagine).
