BEAUTY AND THE BARGAIN

With a new semester underway, college students are spending money left and right on tuition, textbooks, dorm furnishings, and those surprise “university fees.” Our schools just love to tack onto our bills. Since there’s no skipping out on the necessary expenses of higher education, we’re not left with much wiggle room in our budgets to purchase the other essentials: makeup, hair products, skin care items, etc.

In today’s society, teenagers and young adults are heavily influenced to buy the newest, highest quality, (and often most expensive) products available. As any makeup wearer can attest to, a simple trip to the cosmetic counter can easily turn into a $100+ affair. While it’s perfectly okay to splurge on a coveted name-brand beauty item every now and then, no one’s bank account is going to allow every product they use on a regular basis to be salon quality!

While some may shudder at the thought, there’s absolutely no shame in incorporating a few drugstore beauty products into your routine. It may require some trial and error experimenting to figure out which brands work for you, but the money you’ll save is totally worth it. If you’re new to the penny-pinching ways of college life, my recommendations on a few of my favorite products I use every day might help you get started:

Maybelline Super Stay 24 Hour Color – Lipstick is something I can never have enough of, but this one is definitely my favorite! It comes in tons of colors (my go-to is Timeless Rose), its super easy to use, and it really does last over 24 hours. Better yet, it doesn’t smear or wipe off, even if you’re eating or drinking. The price varies among stores, but I’ve purchased it for anywhere from $5.69 to $9.99.

eos shave cream – You’ve most likely bought or at least
heard of products by eos (evolution of smooth) already, especially their popular lip balms. But their unique shaving cream is definitely the unsung hero. It comes out like lotion, leaves your skin soft as can be, and gives the closest shave of anything I’ve tried before. It rings up at a very affordable price of $2.79-$4.89.

OGX Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco – Argan oil products are pretty popular, but they can also be pretty pricey. This hair oil from ogx, formerly known as organix, comes in several varieties for various hair types. For my crazy, curly, and often frizzy mane, I use the Extra Penetrating Oil for dry & coarse hair. I squeeze a quarter size amount into my palm, run it through damp hair, and my natural curls air-dry to be defined and glossy without the “crunchy” look of many hair products. At $5.79, this one’s worth every penny.
