HOW DO YOU ANSWER A QUESTION LIKE THAT?

It was one of those uncomfortable instances in class when the teacher confronts you with the demand of telling the class a fact about yourself. As a college freshman, I assumed those silly icebreakers were over and done with, but as I sat in class and listened to the students share facts about themselves, I realized it wasn’t.

After hearing fascinating details of each person’s life, it was my turn. The most basic, yet most genuine thing I could think of at the moment was to tell my professor and the class that I loved music. It led to dull stares and the burning question of, “why do you like music?”

How do you answer a question like that?

Music has been a part of my life since day one. I grew up on Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. My parents flaunted the diverse bands and artists they listened to, and influenced me with how they feel towards music.

The kick of the drum in your chest when you are at a concert is one of the most riveting things you could ever feel. The atmosphere of surrounding yourself with beautiful people singing along to the melodies of a song is something every human should experience. Music brings happiness and hope and the simplicity of just loving something so lovely.

There are limitless answers as to why I love music. After pondering the best response to the silly question, I came up with a generic, yet somehow perfect answer of “I don’t know, I just do.”

How could I have explained in just a short time my hopes, fears, and happiness and everything else that comes along with my love for music? The friends I have made all over the world, the experiences I have had—nothing in the world could explain the true devotion I have for music.

How do you answer a question like that?
