In January of this year, I went to an event in LA called “Winter Lights,” which is where I had the pleasure of discovering and meeting a band called False Puppet. False Puppet consists of two brothers, Tyler (19, lead vocals/guitarist) and Brennan (18, drummer) Benko, and their friend, Channing (19, bassist/backup vocals) Peake. They’re a small band from Santa Barbara, California with a punk rock/pop punk sound and energy that can get any crowd going. I wasn’t a fan of them before the event, nor had I even heard of them, but that all changed after I saw them perform.
There was a meet and greet with all of the acts before the show started, which was where I met them for the first time. They were incredibly lovely and I couldn’t wait to see if their talent would match up to how pleasing they are as people.
Their performance went above and beyond my expectations. They got everyone jumping and dancing to their music, and although not many people knew who they were when they got on stage, they definitely walked off as a crowd favorite. My favorite performance of the night was their cover of ‘Lose Yourself’ by Eminem. They recreated it with their own sound and completely owned it. The atmosphere during their performance was unreal, not a single person was standing still. I met them again after their performance; they were chilling by the bar and taking pictures/spending time with any new fans who approached them. My friend and I went up to them and told them that their performance was amazing and they thanked us multiple times and gave us hugs. They seemed so humbled by the whole experience and it was great to meet such talented and down to earth people with so much ambition. The band started out doing gigs for small crowds at their school, and eventually earned themselves a slot on the Vans Warped Tour in 2012. I can’t wait to see them progress as a band and what they accomplish, they’re definitely a band with true potential that everyone should keep an eye on.
