On June 26 of this year, Youtube phenom Troye Sivan announced that he signed a record deal with EMI Australia. Little did his loyal fans know that he had actually been signed with this record label since June 5, 2013. This deal included an EP entitled TRXYE to be released on August 15, 2014. Fans went crazy over this news. An internet campaign in support of this music release went viral with thousands of fans switching their Twitter profile pictures to mock ups of the TRXYE album cover with pictures of themselves dawning a blue filter and a red dash over their eyes stating the EP’s title.
Troye released his first single off of the album on July 25, 2014 called “Happy Little Pill”. This very catchy jam sports a fun and catchy pop tune that sticks to the walls of your brain immediately. The song took the internet by storm and raised the level of expectation for the EP by the fans incredibly. Luckily, they didn’t have to wait long before they got to jam out to the set of five songs themselves.
Once August 15th rolled around the fans flocked to iTunes to download the EP which went number one in a whopping 55 countries! This feat took nineteen year old Sivan by surprise. Longing to see what all of the talk was about, I downloaded the EP to find out for myself. I was very surprised that the second track on the album entitled “Touch” dawned a subtle R&B vibe much like that of Frank Ocean. This track is a prime workout jam (that actually helped me run a 7 minute mile at the gym the other day. Thank you for that Troye!) and it features some gnarly bass drops that make you feel like you’re at a music festival.
The third track on the album is titled “Fun”. This song is one that you can ride around with the windows down to. It is a very pop-y tune that just reminds you of hanging out with some friends in the sun at a pool party or just living out your reckless youth years before the inevitable terror of college loans crash your party. This song is most definitely chart-topping potential. Track number four is named “Gasoline”. Troye took to his Twitter to answer some fan questions shortly after the EP’s debut when he told a fan that this track was his favorite off the whole project. This song has a very Mariah Carrey meets Jhene Aiko saying hello to Drake feel to it. It’s a tune that will surely get you in your “feels”. It is actually a really good track and one of my favorites off the EP personally. The melody will get you snapping your fingers and singing at night in your car during the rain in no time.
The final track off the EP is titled “The Fault In Our Stars MMXIV”. This one is a new rendition of Sivan’s original song that he previously released in 2013. He posted the original song to his Tumblr and it got overwhelming support which led him to create a music video to go alongside it as well. This track is a slower song that is dedicated to the popular John Green book. It was his original hit so it only made sense to add some rad drums and synthesizer beats to accompany the vocals. Overall, the song is very mellow and cool.
I had the amazing opportunity to meet Troye Sivan back in March and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The EP is fantastic and it lived up to all of the hype that came along with it. I love Sivan’s music and wish the best for his blossoming career. Every song on this project carries a different story that all comes together to create a piece of musical magic. I recommend it to anybody that is searching for new music to jam out to during the approaching changing seasons. Good job Troye!
