SIR SLY CONCERT REVIEW

Have you ever seen a lead singer head bang so hard that you just admire the pace, stamina, and strength the person has? Because this past Saturday night, I stood in awe as I watched Landon Jacobs from Sir Sly head bang and dance on a stage much too small for him.

Sir Sly are a pop indie band from Los Angeles, California who came onto the music scene two years ago. The band consists of five members: Landon Jacobs, Hayden Coplen, Jason Suwito, Philippe Gutierrez, and Chase Kensrue.

I’ve seen them twice now, and both times they’ve been incredible. Their set list consisted of songs off their EP “Gold” and new tracks set to be released on their debut album “You Haunt Me”.

But the night had quite the story with it, so I’ll give you an inside scoop on why you should love these guys.

The venue the show was at was apparently an 18+ venue, but Sir Sly had released the information earlier on saying the event was for all ages. Naturally, panic spread due to the fact that I, along with many others, was only 17 years old. My friend Soph and I decided to walk to a pizza parlor next to the venue to try to find a black sharpie in order to put X’s on the back of our hands to enter the venue. In order to get to the pizza place, you have to pass the alley where the buses are parked. And sure enough, Landon was outside eating a piece of pizza and he came towards us.

Soph has seen them three times and they know her at this point, and I can’t be more thankful because her friendship with them helped us get in.
We explained to Landon the situation we were in and he assured us he would try to get the show changed to all ages.

Soph and I then returned to our friends in line and sat for another hour before security started to check ID’s to get into the venue. Soph and I decided to take a trip back to the buses hoping that Landon would come out and tell us what our next move was.

Instead we saw Hayden walking towards the bus, and as he saw Soph and me, his face erupted into a warm smile. He hugged us both and we explained to him the situation as well. And being the fantastic human being he is, he walked both of us down the alley and through the backstage door straight into the venue and the VIP area.

Just like that, we went from being stranded outside to eating pizza backstage with Landon.  But that’s how Sir Sly are, they love their fans. They don’t just say it, they act upon it. Later on, they completed their mission and the event was changed to all ages, so all the fans outside were allowed in.

They went on stage later that night, and they are some of the most incredible performers I’ve ever seen. They were the real deal too, with a stage fully equipped with lights and fancy things to make them look super cool too.

The set list was as follows:
Where I’m Going
Found You Out
Too Far Gone
Floods
Inferno
Ghost
Miracle
Marvin’s Room (THE MOST AMAZING THING I’VE EVER HEARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE)
You Haunt Me
Nowhere
The First Stone
Gold

There were moments where Landon walked over to Hayden on the drums and they just looked at each other and started going really hard to the song and those were the moments I lived for. I’ve never seen a band transform on stage like they do and show so much passion for their craft. They layer their instruments and vocals perfectly and not a single beat goes unnoticed and unappreciated.

After an hour and a half of intense rocking, they even put up with extremely rude venue security and made sure that everyone who wanted a picture or something signed, got it. They ended up being forced outside the venue, but on one of the busiest streets of Orlando on a Saturday night, they made a multitude of girls smile.

They made a great choice to come to Florida on this tour, and I’m thankful they did. They’re truly one of the greatest groups of musicians and people I’ve ever met and I hope tons of success comes their way.

My only worry now is will they remember the crew of Orlando girls who danced so ridiculously and took silly Polaroid’s with them? We can only hope.
I hope I don’t become a Ghost to them.
