AUGUSTA REVIEW

Guess who’s back to rave about an awesome, musician named Scott Helman... AGAIN. If you didn’t give him a listen after reading my last article on him, you better do it this time. Helman recently released his new EP titled Augusta. This 7 track EP features 5 new songs and 2 songs from his other EP, Songs For Friends

I can list about a thousand reasons for you to listen to Scott Helman’s new EP, but you should listen to it because it’s just incredibly amazing and every other word that is a synonym for amazing.

(I won’t be describing tracks 3 and 7 which are “Cry Cry Cry” and “The Lion” because they are from his past EP, and you can read about them from my past article on Scott if you really wish to check that out.)

Augusta starts off with Scott’s newest single, “Bungalow,” which is a folky, upbeat song that I dearly love. I mean, after looking into the lyrics, I’m pretty positive it’s about sex, but that could just be me overanalyzing the “taking off your clothes” lyric. Regardless, the song is beautiful in itself because it’s more about the love for that special person and how they make you feel. 5 out 5 stars for this song.

The next song on the EP is titled called, “That Sweater”, and it’s also a good tune with a chill vibe. From experience, this is a really good song to do your chores or clean your room to. Vacuuming the living room has been a breeze while listening to “That Sweater.” Also, I recommend dancing by yourself (or if you have cool friends you can dance with them too) to this song. It definitely brightens your mood. The harmonies are absolutely killer as well. Using lyric analyzation, all I can really speculate from this song is that someone really looks good in that sweater. Another 5 out of 5 stars.

Now onto “Machine,” which out of all the songs it is the most relaxed and acoustic-sounding on this EP. Honestly, this song has a great meaning within the lyrics, which is that people are more attached to technology nowadays and need to focus more on the reality of what happens around them. Also, it has this rad, mellow musical interlude after the second chorus which is my favorite part of the song. Once again, an immaculate 5 out 5 stars.

This next one is my favorite song off the whole EP and it’s called “Tikka.” It absolutely sounds like a fall anthem with its euphoric vibe like those songs that play on commercials on TV promoting a new show to watch. This song makes me want to call up my friends and go with them to the beach and have a bonfire at night. Similarly, like “Bungalow,” it has a folky sound to it. This song immediately makes me happy and I can’t not smile and sing along to it. I just really love, love, love, love, love this track. Giving this an 8 out 5 stars.

The last song on Augusta is the live version of “Somewhere Sweet” (there’s a video performance of this song on Scott’s YouTube channel) which has a calm, dulcet tone. It’s a song that takes your mind out of the gutter and into a blissful place. Any troubles I have go away for 5 minutes and 43 seconds when I am listening to this song. Scott wrote this song about wishing to be somewhere else while he was working. And of course, this song is 5 out of 5 stars.

To be honest, all of Scott’s lyrics are pure genius. He is such a talented writer and I cannot wait to hear what else Scott produces.

Overall, this EP is as hot as a nice tikka masala. Nailed it again.

Scott is opening for Cardinals on tour this winter in Canada, as well as doing his own pop up shows. Make sure to check out his website here for more info on how you can get tickets (and for a schedule of his gigs.)

You can buy Augusta here if you're from Canada. The EP is also available free to listen to on Bop FM here.
